Abstract

External APICAL root RESORPTION is a common and occasionally critical problem in ORTHODONTIC treatment of patients.The aim of this investigation was to study any root RESORPTION occurrence in ORTHODONTICally treated first mandibular molars and its relationship to the following factors: age, sex, type and the duration of ORTHODONTIC force.A total of 92 FIRST PERMANENT MOLAR teeth were selected for assessment on 46 panoramic radiographs. Radiographs were taken from 14 boys and 32 girls. 37 teeth had been treated using extrusion with tipping while 54 teeth had only tipping.No evidence was found for a sex or age difference in susceptibility. The type and duration of the ORTHODONTIC forces also displayed no significant association with root RESORPTION.Results suggest that other unknown factors are responsible for this adverse tissue reaction. It seems useful to assess the biochemical factors causing similar differences in root resporption susceptibility.
