Abstract

DRUG abuse is growingly known as a disaster to mankind as overwhelmingly involves a great number of the world population.This study was designed to evaluate the effect of DRUG abuse on periodontium and CARIES development.A group of 100 addicts with 100 culturally matched healthy men were selected for this study. Data collected include: CPITN, oral hygiene implication, CARIES incidence and xerostomia.Results showed mean PERIODONTAL index to be at 2.9 for addicts and 2.5 for control group.Xerostomia had occurred in half of the control group where as this was as high as 78% in study group.Occlusal CARIES incidence were equal among the study and control group, while cervical CARIES were found to be two times more in study group.In conclusion: Poor Oral hygiene is the prime cause of PERIODONTAL disease and CARIES among the addicts and its importance should be reinforced.
