Abstract

This study was performed to assess anatomical changes in WOMEN suffering from OSTEOPOROSIS, in 1998.This investigation was conducted on 86 female patients with more than 20 years of age who were referred to the Department of oral radiology for a panoramic radiograph. Using these panoramic radiographs, Vertical height of MANDIBLE was measured in the region of mental foramen. The distance between mental foramen to the inferior border of MANDIBLE was considered as the index in addition to the cortical morphology, and the thickness of inferior cortex. All selected cases had both premolars present with no history of any systemic or hormonal diseases. Bone resorption was evaluated with the factors including: age, menopause, marriage, number of pregnancies and level of education.Results revealed that bone resorption increases with age, menopause and multiple pregnancies.Surprisingly, those with higher level of education had a lower rate of resorption. It is concluded that, anatomic indices could lead to the diagnosis of bone resorption rate and help in an on time diagnosis of OSTEOPOROSIS.
