Abstract

Background and Objective: In medicine, one of the most common ways of research is students' theses. Writing a thesis based on a standard method is an important aspect of performing a research project. The aim of this study was to assess Writing principles and application of results of medical students' theses in Zanjan University of Medical Sciences in 2007-2011. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all theses of medical students who defended between 2007 and 2011 were evaluated using a checklist which was designed according to Writing principles. Data was analyzed using frequency tables, central measures and statistical tests such as ANOVA, independent Ttest, and chi-square test via SPSS software. Results: Mean of overall score for theses was 80. 16± 5. 93 with maximum and minimum score of 91. 5 and 52 respectively. 134 (85. 9%) of theses had a good quality of writing, 21(13. 5%) were moderate and 1(0. 6%) was unstructured. The highest quality of writing was related to “ reference” section and the lowest was related to “ discussion” section. The mean of overall score was statistically different between basic and clinical education groups (P=0. 003). Results of 68. 6% of students' theses had been used in practice and there was an association between application of results and paper publication (P=0. 009). Conclusion: Results of this study indicated that a high proportion of medical students' theses had a good quality of writing and the highest quality of writing was related to “ reference” section and the lowest was related to “ discussion” section. Therefore, educational workshops on Writing principles especially methods of writing “ discussion” section of thesis and paper writing are recommended to be held for students.
