Abstract

The stages of wayfaring of a wayfarer are arranged in the light of concentration or vigilance which is one of the most fundamental elements of practical mysticism. This element is one of the most critical teachings of Imam Khomeini while Ayatollah Mohammad Bahari Hamedani, a contemporary mystic, laid emphasis on this element in his writings. The present article is an attempt to discuss the similarities and differences between the viewpoints of the two thinkers about this element. Hence in the first place vigilance is defined and then its significance is discussed. In the next step, it is argued that knowledge of God is an important factor in occurrence of vigilance and REPENTANCE is another element which has its impact on vigilance. Also contemplation and SUPPLICATION that have been neglected in the mystic literature are considered as important factors in sustainability of vigilance. Also two impediments of surveillance in the viewpoints of the two thinkers are discussed, that is, diversion from the path of Sharia and stagnation in the stage of intuition.
