Abstract

Healthcare workers including nursing and midwifery students are at risk of occupational exposure to blood-born pathogens via sharp injuries such as needle stick injuries(NSI).to reduce these risks, promoting the KNOWLEDGE and expertise of students is necessary. The aim of this study was to determine the KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, and PRACTICEs of these students regarding their prevention at Azad university, Sari Branch, Iran, in 2009.Methods: A cross-sectional study evaluated KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE and PRACTICEs of clinical students regarding protective strategies against BBP by self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 200 students .The data were analysed by SPSS (version 16 Result: The scoring of KNOWLEDGE in 37.7% of students was low. Also 54.5% of them had negative ATTITUDE about BBP and 48% of these students had poor PRACTICEs. About 95% of students had been vaccinated against HB.Conclusion: This study demonstrated that KNOWLEDGE level of students was inadequate, a lot of them had negative ATTITUDE and their PRACTICEs was suboptimal. So students need formal education about standard precaution and effective management of BBP.
