  51-57

Abstract

Background & objectives: DRIVERS are exposed to various harmful factors and occupational hazards. NOISE is one of the physical agents present in the work environment that has been known to cause occupational HEARING LOSS. Hearing protection of workers especially DRIVERS is essential regarding to safety and health. The present study was performed to determine HEARING LOSS among DRIVERS of Fereidoon'kenar city. Methods: This cross - sectional study was performed on 150 cases of DRIVERS. Hearing threshold of DRIVERS was measured by audiometer device. Data was analyzed by means of SPSS17 software. For normality of data assessment we used Kolomogrov-Smirnov test. Wilcoxon and kruskal-wallis test have used to compare threshold hearing level and mean for threshold hearing level in driver respectively. Results: Results showed that the mean of age in taxi DRIVERS and agency DRIVERS were 43.5±10.8 and 40.7±8.3 years respectively, and mean of job tenure in both taxi DRIVERS and agency DRIVERS were 9.5±9.94 and 6.54±5.6 years, respectively. Average hearing threshold level in right and left ears were 12.96±4.2 and 12.74±4.64 dB in agency DRIVERS, and 12.53±5.16 and 15.61±12.7 dB in taxi DRIVERS, respectively. Conclusion: Results showed that auditory status of DRIVERS was satisfactory, at present. No traffic on the streets and less NOISE pollution sources can be important reasons that driver’s exposure to NOISE is low in this city. The rate of HEARING LOSS in taxi DRIVERS were less than agency DRIVERS.
