Abstract

BRONCHIECTASIS is a pathologic condition that refers to dilated, thickened airways. It is a consequence of chronic inflammation and infections which lead to anatomic distortion and dilation of the bronchi. The male patient, a 51-year-old non-smoker from Tehran and member of the Armed Services, had a history of multiple hospitalizations for lung infections. He presented to the Pulmonary Clinic with complaints of chronic productive cough which had worsened over the past year. He was hospitalized two to three times for his respiratory condition, and once in childhood when he was 10-11 years old. The hospitalizations were slightly beneficial, however his sputum production has gradually increased. In developing countries, lung infection is the most common etiology. Vaccinations and use of antibiotics have decreased infections related pediatric BRONCHIECTASIS in developed countries. In this patient, psittacosis should be considered as he has a pet canary. Avian circoviruses have also been hypothesized to contribute to bird fancier’s lung. Other considerations include salmonellosis, toxoplasmosis and allergic alveolitis, as well as bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens, and parasitic organisms because of the presence of eosinophilia. Significant morbidity associated with this condition exists.
