Title

THE EFFECTS OF IRON SUPPLEMENTATION ON BODY IRON STORES IN ATHLETE WOMEN

Pages

  97-108

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8 weeks IRON SUPPLEMENTATION on body iron stores in ATHLETE WOMEN. Samples of study were 28 women fitness athletes with SERUM FERRITIN content lower than 20 ng/ml, and mean age 26.39±2.64 years, height 163±4.17 cm and weight 61.61±5.70 Kg, divided into two groups randomly in a double blind project. One group was placebo group (control) and the other group was user of Iron supplement (experimental). SERUM FERRITIN, HEMOGLOBIN and HEMATOCRIT concentration, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and percent TRANSFERRIN saturation of subjects were measured before and after IRON SUPPLEMENTATION. The experimental group used 100 mg of elemental iron as ferrous sulfate and control group used placebo daily for 8 weeks. The data analysis (by paired t-test and independent t-test) in experimental group, showed that 8 weeks IRON SUPPLEMENTATION have significant effects (P<0.05) on all measured parameters and in placebo group showed no significant effect among women athletes. In comparison between two groups after supplementation, the result showed that IRON SUPPLEMENTATION lead to better condition in experimental group than placebo group at SERUM FERRITIN concentration (P=0.005), but in other parameters no significant differences was observed (P>0.05). To decrease the probability of iron deficiency anemia in women athletes we suggested that they use iron or other nutritional supplements (like Vitamin C) under supervision of physician or specialist.
