Abstract

Introduction: Mental disorders are one of the major health problems facing the society and economy. The prevalence of mental disorders has led the nurses, as the main caregivers of a medical team, to need guidance and training in order to provide good quality care and professional standard services. Evidence-based nursing guidelines are important tools in increasing the quality of nurses› clinical practices.Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effect of evidence-based nursing guidelines on the quality standard of care in patients hospitalized in the psychiatric section.Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was carried out in the Psychiatric Ward of Army 505 Hospital in Tehran in 2015. Interventions included training guidelines of EVIDENCE-BASED NURSING CARE for psychiatric nurses and to put the same guidelines based on the nursing process into enforcement for patients admitted to the Psychiatry Care Unit. Before and after the intervention, the quality of nursing care was measured via American Nurses Association (ANA) questionnaire as well as through observation and review of documentations from the records of 66 patients admitted to the Psychiatry Care Unit (33 cases before and 33 after the intervention). The usual nursing care quality was assessed and recorded via standards of quality nursing care questionnaires from the ANA standards of nursing care, and then, evidence-based nursing guidelines were taught. Data were collected after the intervention. The collected information was analyzed using descriptive statistics and SPSS version 21.Results: Comparing the average score for all the stages of the nursing process, there was a significant difference before and after the intervention (P<0.001). Before the intervention, the mean (SD) scores recorded was zero in the diagnosis and planning phases of the nursing process, 6.09 (1.814) in the implementation phase, and 1.27 (1.95) in the evaluation phase, whereas after the intervention, the mean scores were 4 (0) on the detection phase, 5.94 (0.68) in scheduling, 14.24 (1.001) in running, and 6.21 (0.27) in evaluation phases.Discussion and Conclusion: Evidence-based care has an important role in improving the quality of nursing care. Therefore, the implementation of evidence-based care guidelines is recommended for health care trainings.
