Abstract

Aging is the last stage of human life. Different viewpoints on aging have been presented and studied. The purpose of this study was to determine older people's views on their past lives before settling in nursing home, their beliefs, thoughts and feelings about death and their views on the post-mortem life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 elderly people living in a boarding nursing home. The interviews were thoroughly analyzed and data were analyzed using Colaizzi descriptive method, which provided three main themes and eighteen sub-themes. The main themes included the life the person wished to live, ideas on death, and after death life. The most intriguing themes were the concepts of suppressing one's own needs for the needs of others, the anxiety of death, isolation, acceptance of death, and the desire for eternal life in peace.
