Abstract

 Purpose: The aim of this research is to measure the synergy of Knowledge-based economy (KBE) at provicinal and national levels in Iranian industrial firms as well as modeling the encountered synergy. Methodology: The Triple helix model of Innovation systems for geographical, technological and organizational distributions of industrial fims was measured. Out of 87934 active firms documented in Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, 46150 firms catego-rized based on NACE as high-tech, medium-high tech and knowledge intensive sectors which formed our research community. The parameters affecting the synergy of KBE, were extracted by forming a two-stage Delphi Panel using 12 experts of related fiels and hence 10 effective components including population, growth rate, employment rate, literacy rate, economic participation rate, Internet penetration rate, number of university students, number of univer-sities, scientific productions and ex-ports, were indentified. Then using the structured equations procedure, their relationship with KBE was outlined in a comperhansive model. Findings: Our Triple helix calculations showed that while TGTO at national level is negative (-0. 005 bit), The correspounding values at provincial level are clearly positive for 23 provinces among all 31 provinces denoting unfavorite situations, among components in our proposed model, merely population and number of university students appear to have meaningful relations with synergy of industial firmsl. Conclustion: National aggglomration sig-nificantly adds to the synergy in the system and a highly integrated national innovation system was proposed for Iran. On the other hand, among 10 components affecting the KBE, it is only population that has positive effect while the number of students has negative effect with synergy of KBE. The justification for our findings was dis-cussed in the paper.
