Abstract: 

Purpose: This research investigates the aims, audiences and challeng-es that the scientometrics departments of Iranian medical universities are faced with. Methodology: The present research is an applied survey in which qualitative methods are utilized. The research population consists of the Iranian scientometricians as well as the staff and managers involved in scientometrics and research offices in three medical universities in Tehran i. e. Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBUMS). In total 25 people were interviewed and the data were processed in a grounded theory method in which main categories and sub-categories were identified. Findings: Two main categories were identified as the aims of the departments: (1) science planning and mapping; and, (2) research promotion and development. The potential audiences of the scientometrics departments are categorized as internal and external groups where internal audi-ences are those who work in the university. The main challenges the scientometrics departments in medical universities are faced with can be categorized as: (1) organizational structure; and (2) knowledge interpreta-tion. Conclusion: The categories and subcategories explored for the scientometrics departments in medical universities can help better understanding of such departments in universities and can facilitate development of scientometrics departments and programs in other universities and institu-tions.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the status of publications from the Master theses in the field of Information Science and Knowledge Studies, published during 2001-2013. Methodology: This study is a descriptive survey which has been conducted using bibliometrics approaches. The data for 1237 related master theses were collected from the List of LIS theses at Iranian universities and from Iranian List of LIS Theses. Magiran and Noormgz databases were searched for articles resulting from theses. The Excel software package was used for the purpose of data analysis. Findings: Results re-veal that in total, the average of annual growth rate for the papers published out of these were 1. 13. According to the findings, more than half of the theses (61%) remained unpublished, and only 39% of them resulted to the publication of 508 papers. Of the published theses, 95% resulted in only 1 publication in a scholarly journal. Conclusion: The fact that more than half of theses in the field of Information Science and Knowledge Studies do not get chance to get published and the fact that more than one third of the papers extracted from theses in this field, are published in non-LIS journals, are warning for scientific policy makers of the field.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The aim of this study was to re-view the accuracy of citations of articles published in Iranian Journal of Information Processing and Man-agement (JIPM) in the period 2013-2015, respectively. Methodology: This research is an applied study and it was conducted based on data gathering methods and survey. The research population consists of the articles published in the issues 75 to 83 of JIPM during 2013-2015, the total number of articles reached to 108 with 2, 700 citations. The original sample size was 436 citations with 7. 95% confi-dence; however, it was reduced to 392 in order to exlude those articles with no citation. Four citations in each article were selected based on document type and language. Findings: The results showed that of the 392 citations reviewed, 269 items (62. 68 percent) were cited without any error. Citation and references to Latin script articles and also citations to books showed more errors. Conclusion: The results showed that the citations in JIPM are in general better compared to the findings of previous studies in terms of citation errors. Several factors may be involved in the development of citation errors such as lack of awareness of the importance of the firm citations in scien-tific literature, researchers lack familiarity with management software such references (EndNote, Pazhuhyar etc. ) for optimal management of citation in dissertations and copying citation outlined.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The purpose of this study is bibliometric analysis of the scientific publications produced in the field digital library which have been included in Web of Science. Methodology: This study is a cross-sectional survey and applied research. Research community is all indexed scientific production in the field of digital library which have been indexed in Web of Scientce be-tween the years 1992-2015. Findings: The results showed that USA and England are two leading countries in production of knowledge in the field of digital libraries and Iran ranks is 30 in the world. The highest number of pub-lications is in the field of computer science (information systems), and library and infor-mation science respectively. The leading author in the field of digital libraries is Edward Fox with 26 research work. Among Iranian scholars, Ali Shiri has published more scientific work in this field. Conclusion: Since 2006, a proportionate reduction has occurred in production of articles in the topic of digital libraries based on Web of Science. Digital libraries around the world are spreading, lack of strong scientific sup-port, in the future may impact the practice of existing digital libraries.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The Purpose of this research is measuring the h-index of the faculty members at Islamic Azad University, Tehran Sciences and Research Branch based on Scopus bibliometric data. Accordingly, the rate of scientific products, citation, and h-index of mentioned faculty members have been assessed in terms of gender, scientific rank, discipline, and college. Methodology: Research population is composed of 553 faculty members. The approach applied is bibliometrics along with library research method. Needed data were collected via searching in Scopus. Afterwards, desire data were inserted in a questionnaire for final analysis. Findings: Findings showed that for more than 74% of the faculty members, the h-index equals to zero. On average, h-index in men is double compared to women's. Additionally, it was found that the highest h-index is of associate professors, professors, assistant professors, and lecturers, respectively. Also, there was a significant difference at h-index of the participants in terms of gender, scientific rank, and subject area. Conclusion: Generally, h-index of mentioned faculty members is so low compared to rate of h-index at international level.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The purpose of this study is analyzing the Iranian medical sciences systematic review articles based on scientometric indicators. Methodology: This study followed a quantitative approach using bibliometric techniquea and software and analyzed the 382 systematic reviews in the field of medical sciences published by Iranian authosrs from 1970 to 2016 based on Web of Science database. Findings: Iranian researchers have published 421systematic review articles which places them are in the 22nd rank worldwide. Out of these 421 articles, 382 items are in the the field of medical sciences. Results showed the fast rate of this type of articles since 2006 to 2015, most of the review articles indexed in General and Internal Medicine Subject Category. From the point of scientific collaboration, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences has produced most of the joint articles in collaboration with researchers from other countries and United States, Italy, France and Germany have significant role in producing Iranian medical sciences review articles. Out of 10 journals, 6 belong to Iranian organi-zations. Conclusion: Regarding to the importance of review articles in health domain policy making and clinical decisions and the growing worldwide attention to this kinds of articles, suitable planning for publishing and funding systematic reviews is necessary.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The aim of this study was to in-vestigate the scientific output of the Middle East countries in the field of artificial intel-ligence from 1996 to 2014. Methodology: In this study, bibliometrics methods have been used. With the search conducted in the Sco-pus database, a total of 376 709 documents were obtained within the range of the target years. Then through SCIMAGO and and Global Innovation In-dex and using Excel software necessary analyzes were per-formed. Findings: The results showed that Middle East countries had produced only 4. 03 percent of world publications in the field of artificial intelligence. In terms of scientific production and the number of documents cited, Iran ranks17 in the world and based on the same indicator it has ranked first in the Middle East with producing 5156 document. In co-operation with other countries and H index, citations and the number of citations per document Israel and based on the number of self-citations, Turkey rank first among the countries of the region. Conclusion: Iran ranks first in the Middle East in terms of scientific pro-duction in the field of artificial intelligence but needs to strengthen the citations and the international cooperation in science and development.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The aim is paper to study and compare subject fields contributing in converging technologies (biotechnology, nanotechnology, infor-mation technology and cognitive science) sci-entific output in Iran (2001-2015) and find out about their com-mon and uncommon subfields. Methodology: This applied study uses bib-liometric techniques. The data gathered from Scopus. Findings: The largest number of articles be-longed to Bio, Nano, Info and cognitive sciences respectively. The highest growth rate occurred during the period belonged to nano, info, cognitive and bio sciences re-spectively. Conclusion: Diversity of subjects contribu-tion to nano and bio sciences was more than cognitive and in-formation sciences. Biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, medicine, computer sciences, engineering and ‘ pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceutics’ were common in all four areas. Chemistry and material science were the fields that could massively impact nano, bio and infor-mation sciences.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between the state of university-industry co-publication and the state of commercialization of knowledge in the form of spin-off in the Iranian universities. Methodology: Using scientometrics meth-od, the university-industry co-publications in Iran was calculated during 2010-2014, as well as its relation with spin-off formation in the Iranian universities during the mentioned period by calculating the Spearman Corre-lation Coefficient. Findings: The results of the study indicated that there was a sig-nificant relationship between the universi-ty-industry co-publications and spin-off formation in the target universities during the studied years. In other words, more collaboration between universities and industries means more spin-off formation in uni-versities. Conclusion: Based on the results of this research, relevant authorities can develop research policies so that the university-industry collaboration in the form of co-publication are encouraged so as to increase and help commercialization of knowledge. Joint research with commercial interest can make the linkage between university and industry stronger, and at the same time, meets the job requirements of both groups. Considering this, focusing on joint publication is expected to create knowledge commercialization.

Abstract: 

Purpose: The aim of this research is to measure the synergy of knowledge-based economy (KBE) at provicinal and national levels in Iranian industrial firms as well as modeling the encountered synergy. Methodology: The triple helix model of innovation systems for geographical, technological and organizational distributions of industrial fims was measured. Out of 87934 active firms documented in Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, 46150 firms catego-rized based on NACE as high-tech, medium-high tech and knowledge intensive sectors which formed our research community. The parameters affecting the synergy of KBE, were extracted by forming a two-stage Delphi Panel using 12 experts of related fiels and hence 10 effective components including population, growth rate, employment rate, literacy rate, economic participation rate, Internet penetration rate, number of university students, number of univer-sities, scientific productions and ex-ports, were indentified. Then using the structured equations procedure, their relationship with KBE was outlined in a comperhansive model. Findings: Our Triple Helix calculations showed that while TGTO at national level is negative (-0. 005 bit), The correspounding values at provincial level are clearly positive for 23 provinces among all 31 provinces denoting unfavorite situations, among components in our proposed model, merely population and number of university students appear to have meaningful relations with synergy of industial firmsl. Conclustion: National aggglomration sig-nificantly adds to the synergy in the system and a highly integrated national innovation system was proposed for Iran. On the other hand, among 10 components affecting the KBE, it is only population that has positive effect while the number of students has negative effect with synergy of KBE. The justification for our findings was dis-cussed in the paper.
