Abstract

The present research is aimed at studying the underlying factors of divorce in the socio-cultural context of Tehran. This is a qualitative study conducted on the basis of grounded theory method. The required data were collected using the purposive sampling method and semi-structured interview. To achieve theoretical saturation, 22 individuals who met the requirements were investigated. To find out the factors, the collected data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’s techniques, which included coding the concept formation. Data analysis in open coding led to the identification of the main factors, components, and sub-components. The results revealed that lack of love and intimacy are the central factors of the pattern of the findings. Lack of preparation for marriage and the failure to properly follow the process of marriage are among the casual factors for marriage breakdown. Cultural and economic issues were included among the intervening conditions, and such issues as addiction, the inappropriate structure of the current family, lack of marital compatibility, sexual problems, inappropriate relationship with the families of origin, family background, and personality problems are among the underlying factors that impact divorce. The results showed that the use of ineffective communication and emotional strategies resulted in consequences such as a feeling of fatigue, loneliness, despair, hatred of the spouse, and ultimately a desire for divorce.
