EFFECT OF RAMADAN ON SEX HORMONES AND GONADOTROPINS IN HEALTHY AND YOUNG MEN

Abstract

Introduction: To determine FSH, LH, Testosterone and DHEA before and during Ramadan in healthy adults.Material & Methods: Study is quasiexperimental (before-after) study. Subjects were 93 healthy young males from Abdolazim religious school who were fast during Ramadan obtained one hour before sunset one week before and at 14th and 28th day of Ramadan and all samples were freezed at -80oc. Hormonal studies were done by RIA methods. Statistical study was done by paired t-test and ANOVA.Results: FSH decreased significantly (4.8 ± 6.7 Vs 3.79 ± 2.4 Vs 3.86 ± 2.29 mlu/ml, p<0.02). LH levels had mild but significant increase in males (3.65 ± 2.09 Vs 41 ± 2.1 Vs 2.45 ± 3.85 mlu/ml, p<0.02). DHEA decreased significantly (225.15 ± 90.31 Vs 212.16 ± 97.12 Vs 201.17 ± 82.92 ng/ml, p<0.001). Testosterone had mild significant decrease in males (6.07 ± 1.28 Vs 6.60 ± 1.66 Vs 3.36 ± 1.67 ngjml, p<O.04). Prolactin levels also increased during first two weeks and declined later (10.4±6.34 Vs 13.95±6 Vs 12.05±6.46, P<0.039). All value for different tests were within normal ranges.Conclusion: This study revealed that despite of significant hormonal changes during Ramadan, all changes were within normal ranges of tests-And this alteration dose not cases any clinical features.
