THE EFFECT OF HEMI-SYNC SOUND THERAPY ON IMPROVEMENT OF SOME OF THE ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR INDICATORS AND AUDIOLOGIC CRITERIA IN 16-21 YEAR – OLD MENTAL RETARDS

Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays, HEMI-SYNC is a SOUND THERAPY method which is used in treatment of individuals with sensory and motor disorders. This method is based on sensory integration (SI) rule, and applies a binaural beat technology. Studies have shown that listening to these signals along with back ground sound (noise or music) provides a specific sensory integration and increases attention and learning. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of HEMI-SYNC SOUND THERAPY on improvement of some of the adaptive behavior indicators and audio logic criteria in 16-21 year - old mental retards.Material & Methods: 6 mental retards aged 16 - 21 years old in Nemooneh Educational and Rehabilitation Center took part in this study. Data obtained were processed through single subject analysis procedure. To determine the effect of this therapeutic method, a questionnaire was used to evaluate some of the adaptive behavior indicators, also, trainers were interviewed (these made behavioral or non audiologic criteria), and hearing thresholds changes were evaluated (audiologic criteria). Results: Remarkable improvements were observed in some adaptive behaviors such as memory function, eye contact, following the orders, anger and aggressiveness, adaptation to changes, and also in interviews with trainers and audiologic criteria. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant effect of HEMI-SYNC SOUND THERAPY on decreasing some of the adaptive behavior criteria accompanying the MENTAL RETARDATION. It is expected that these effects would be studied further in future.
