Abstract

The eye is able to see different distances clearly via a focusing system. Crystaline lens of the eye is responsible for the diopteric power change of the whole eye, which is called accommodation. The maximum accomodation is AMPLITUDE OF ACCOMODATION. During AGING, the accomodation decreases and the eye becomes hypermetrop, a condition called PRESBYOPIA. It has been shown that the onset of PRESBYOPIA is about 45 years of age (Danders table). However, outpatients under 45 years old claimed having difficulty in near vision. The present study investigated differences between AMPLITUDE OF ACCOMODATION in a population in Tehran and studies in other countries. The amplitude of accommodation in about 2300 men and women in different ages, in 13 age groups, has been evaluated. The accomodation amplitude was measured based on Push-Up or Danders methods. The results were analysed and compared with Danders table. It indicates that: 1) the average accommodation amplitude in different areas of Tehran did not differ in a significant manner; 2) the average accomodation amplitude among men and women in different age groups did not show a significant difference either; 3) the average accomodation amplitude in 13 age groups is significantly lower than the Danders table; and 4) PRESBYOPIA in the sample population starts at the age of 37, an age totally different with that mentioned by Dander (i.e. the age 45).
