Title

RELATIVE EFFECTS OF MECHANICAL FACTORS ON LOW BACK PAIN

Pages

  67-76

Abstract

Objective. To collectively investigate the effects of seventeen mechanical factors on occurence of LOW BACK PAIN. Several factors, based on assumptions, clinical findings and scientific experiments, have been associated with the development of LOW BACK PAIN. Controversy exists regarding the effects of some of the factors on LOW BACK PAIN and the effect of some factors have not yet been scientifically examined. Information regarding the specific contribution of each factor to LOW BACK PAIN is needed for effective prevention and appropriate treatment strategies. Methods and Measures. Total of 600 subjects participated in this study. Subjects were categorized in to four group: normal males (N=150, mean age=43+15), normal females (N=150, mean age=43+13), males with LOW BACK PAIN (N=150, mean age=43+14) and females with LOW BACK PAIN (N=150, mean age=43+13). Seventeen variables were measured in each group and the relative effect of each factors on low back pain was measured. Results. Among all factors tested, endurance of back extensor muscles had the highest correlation with LOW BACK PAIN. Other factors such as the length of the back extensor muscles, the strength of hip flexor, hip adductor and abdominal muscles also had a significant relationship with LOW BACK PAIN. Conclusion. It appears that muscle weakness and decreased endurance plays a significant role in LOW BACK PAIN and that structural factors such as the size of lumbar lordosis, pelvic tilt, leg length discrepancy, and the length of abdominal, hamstring and iliopsoas muscles have no significant effect on LOW BACK PAIN.
