Title

THE EFFECT OF ORAL QUERCETIN SUPPLEMENTATION ON GLYCEMIC CONTROL AND OXIDATIVE STRESS IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES

Abstract

Background: QUERCETIN is the most abundant flavonol, naturally found in various kinds of fruits and vegetables, the effect of which on GLYCEMIC CONTROL of type 2 diabetic patients, still remains questionable. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of GLYCEMIC CONTROL and OXIDATIVE STRESS in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: Forty seven patients with controlled type 2 diabetes, aged between 30 to 60 years, were randomly assigned to receive either 250 mg QUERCETIN or placebo for 8 weeks. Fasting blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin concentration, total antioxidant capacity and oxidized LDL were measured in fasting blood samples. The data were analyzed using SPSS ver.13, paired t-test and independent sample t-test.Results: The results of the study indicated that although QUERCETIN improved the insulin concentration in the interventional group to some extent, no statically significant changes were observed in FBS, Hb A1c and insulin level throughout the the study period in either groups (P>0.05).Oral QUERCETIN supplementation, however, caused significant increase in serum TAC concentration in comparison to placebo (P=0.043) and also resulted in statically significant reduction in just the teatment group (P<0.001).Conclusion: Oral QUERCETIN supplementation was beneficial in improving the antioxidant status of patients with type 2 diabetes while having no other significant effect on GLYCEMIC CONTROL; however, conducting further studies, using both different doses and study periods, on the GLYCEMIC CONTROL of the population seems to be valuable.
