Abstract

Marital status is one of the sources of population heterogeneity. Demographic behavior of people, especially fertility behavior, is different in each of the marital status. Few studies have taken place on ethnic differences in marital status. The aim of this paper is to study and compare of marital status composition and marriage characteristics of Kurd and Turk women. Research methodology is documentary. Analysis focused on results of 2006 census of East and West Azerbaijan provinces. Statistical population includes Kurdish women 10-49 years old living in Kurdish districts of west Azerbaijan and Turkish women of East Azerbaijan that their marital status has been reported in the 2006 Census. In the data analysis the MARITAL STRUCTURE and composition of marital status has been describe using RELATIVE DIFFERENCE and DISSIMILARITY indices. In addition, marital characteristics between and inside ethnic groups was examined by calculating related measures. Findings show that MARITAL STRUCTURE of Kurds women is different from Turk counterparts. Furthermore, the composition of marital status in some Kurdish districts has more homogeneous with MARITAL STRUCTURE of Turks women in East Azerbaijan. Results also show the relative variation in the composition of marital status of Kurds women. However, the common characteristic of women’s MARITAL STRUCTURE is generality and universality of marriage. Based on this study, ethnic dependency cannot explain differences in characteristics related to marriage. Different compositions of women’s marital status probably reflect tension between social-economic forces of change and different familial values and norms of women. Therefore, micro-level studies in order to identifying factors and contexts of difference and similarity in MARITAL STRUCTURE is necessary.
