Title

A STUDY OF ZINC STATUS IN LACTATING MOTHERS AND THE GROWTH STATUS OF THEIR INFANTS IN Y AZD CITY

Pages

  67-74

Abstract

Zinc was discovered in 1509 and has been demonstrated as an essential nutrient for living beings in 1869.This element has important and various functions in the human body. There are more than 200 zinc dependent enzymes in the human body. Zinc effects growth ,cell division, sexual maturity, night vision and immune function. Aims of this study were to determine the mean of milk and maternal PLASMA ZINC CONCENTRATION, obtain the percentage of zinc deficient mothers and the nutritional status of their infants ,estimate the mean of infants daily zinc intake, and to compare the related RDA. 140 LACTATING MOTHERs and their infants were randomly selected from 5 health centers. Milk and blood samples were collected and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. The overall mean of plasma and MILK ZINC CONCENTRATIONs were 129±50 and 316±152 µg/dl respectively, which is similar to other studies. 5.8% of mothers were zinc deficient. The mean of the height and weight of infants were 50.9±3.1 cm and 3.4±0.5 kg respectively and Z score of "weight for height", "weight for age" and "height for age" of infants were -0.048± 1.04,-1.28±0.85 and 0.32± 1.3 respectively. 30.6% of girls and 16.1 % of boys were wasted and malnourished, while 8% of girls and 12.9% of boys were stunted and malnourished.Daily zinc intake of infants was 2.29 mg which covers only 45.8% of related RDA. Thus, inadequate zinc intake can be the cause of INFANT MALNUTRITION.
