Abstract

Background and Aim: cigarette smoking is one of the most important social problems. Researchers consider social capital to be a factor in social health and reduce the risk of society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of social capital of the Family on smoking tendency. Method: This research is applied in terms of its purpose, and in terms of its implementation, is a survey. The population of the study consisted of 9940 male and female students of Mazandaran University. 400 of them were selected by proportional random sampling method. Data were collected using researcher-made questionnaire (Cronbach’ s alpha, 90% for Family social capital and 0. 72 for smoking tendency) and analyzed with t-test and multivariate regression. Findings and Results: The research showed that the higher the social and cognitive capital inside and outside the Family, the lower the inclination to cigarette smoking in individuals. However, there is no significant relationship between the social capital structure inside and outside the Family with the rate of smoking. Considering that social cognitive capital has a role in reducing the tendency towards smoking among young people, with such components as: trust, satisfaction, social support, intimacy, monitoring, awareness and friendship, paying attention to this dimension of social capital of the Family; thus it is indispensable to develop smoking prevention policies.
