Abstract

In order to determine the incidence and etiologic factors of prematurety, a descriptional cross-sectional study was conducted on newborns at the obstetrics ward of Beheshti Hospital in Yasuj. 1317 neonates were born in the first half of 1378. After completion of questionnaires that contained some information about parents, maternal age, delivery route, gravida, matenal diseases and drug consumption, sex, birth weight and gestational age and twin pregnancy, physical examination was done by pediatricians. The incidence of 4.8% for PREMATURITY and 7.6% for low birth weights was calculated. In this survey the incidence of PREMATURITY was higher in pre-eclamptic mothers and those with premature rupture of membrane and this finding was statistically meaningful. In twin pregnancy, high gravid, high maternal age, history of drug consumption, neurologic disorders, diabetes mellitus and genitourinary infection, PREMATURITY rate was higher than normal but it was not statistically meaningful.
