Abstract

Introduction: Xerostomia is a condition in which saliva is not secreted in sufficient amounts. The prevalence of Xerostomia is 25-40%. Osteoporosis is a common, yet insidious disease, the early diagnosis of which is of critical importance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Osteoporosis and Xerostomia and the number of remaining teeth in postmenopausal women in Isfahan. Materials & Methods: This case-control study was performed on 129 postmenopausal women >50 years old, referring to an Osteoporosis center in Isfahan in 2018. The subjects were divided into three groups based on bone density. The first group included 38 healthy subjects; the second group included 56 patients with osteopenia; and the third group consisted of 35 patients with Osteoporosis. Xerostomia was determined by a standard questionnaire, and the number of teeth was obtained by clinical examination. The data were analyzed with SPSS 24, using independent-sample t-test, Mann-Whitney test, ANOVA, and Pearson’ s correlation coefficient (α = 0. 05). Results: According to the results, there was no significant relationship between Osteoporosis and Xerostomia (p value = 0. 372). However, there were significant relationships between Osteoporosis and the number of remaining teeth and Xerostomia (p value < 0. 01). Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between Osteoporosis and Xerostomia in postmenopausal women > 50 years of age with Osteoporosis; however, there was a significant relationship between Osteoporosis and the number of missing teeth.
