Title

THE MEANING OF ‘EXISTENCE’ IN THE DEBATE OF ITS PRINCIPALITY OR ABSTRACTNESS

Pages

  141-162

Abstract

There is a major debate, in Islamic philosophy, about the PRINCIPALITY or ABSTRACTNESS of EXISTENCE or essence. Some scholars such as Mulla Sadra preferred the PRINCIPALITY of EXISTENCE and some others such as Suhrawardi and Mirdamad, preferred the PRINCIPALITY of essence. According to Suhrawardi and his followers ‘EXISTENCE’ is an abstracted term or in the other word mental-posit. To discuss the matter exactly, we must consider the meaning of EXISTENCE in both sides; is the meaning of ‘EXISTENCE’ among the revivals same and unified? We used to be frequently occupied in an obscure rereading of the mentioned debate with regard to the meaning of EXISTENCE, and should try to get an exact account to make clear what the problem was for these philosophers. This article is to set out such an account of the usage of word “EXISTENCE” in the related works of Mirdamad and Sadra. We will concentrate on the statements of Mirdamad to show that he was only talking about the infinitive usage of the EXISTENCE (to be) and insisted on its being mental-posit. In contrast, Mulla Sadra, in accepting and proving the PRINCIPALITY of EXISTENCE, never talk about infinitive usage of the word ‘exestence’. Instead, he used the NOMINAL MEANING of EXISTENCE (what exists). Furthermore, I try to show the traces of NOMINAL MEANING in the works of the predecessors of Mulla Sadra, who were often among mystics.
