Abstract

Introduction: In order to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge and the active participation of students in the Operating Room, a surgery preference card (SPC) that can predict the needs of the surgical team was designed. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of SPC on the clinical performance of Operating Room students. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted by Participation 64 Operating Room students. The students were selected through convenience sampling and were divided into two experimental (N=32) and control groups (N=32) randomly. The control group completed their apprenticeship in a common method while the intervention group completed their apprenticeship using the SPC. The data collection tool was a researcher-made performance clinical checklist. The data were analyzed by using the independent T, paired T, Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The findings of this study showed that there was no significant difference between the clinical performance mean score of the control group before and after the intervention (P > 0. 05). However, the clinical performance mean score of the intervention group increased significantly after intervention as compared with before intervention (P <0. 001). Also, the results showed no significant relationship between demographic characteristics and clinical performance (P > 0. 05). Conclusions: Surgery preference card improves the clinical performance of students. Therefore, it is recommended to be used as a supplementary training tool for teaching the Operating Room students.
