Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Arabic Conversation (Case Study: Students of Arabic Conversation 1 & 2 Shiraz University)

Abstract

 Despite benefiting from a high intelligence quotient (IQ), some Arabic language and literature students have difficulty performing speaking skills in Arabic. Therefore, among the various factors associated with improving Arabic speaking skills, emotional quotient (EQ) can play an important role. EQ is a set of skills that allow a person to adapt properly to the environment, endure the pressures of life, and include self-confidence, self-awareness, motivation, positive attitude, and stress control. Students of the Arabic language with intrinsic skill, internal motivation, conscious of their communication skills, and participation in class discourses will overcome obstacles to progress. So, this research's main objectives were to investigate the relationship between Emotional intelligence and achievement of Arabic conversation. This study's descriptive correlation was carried out with 80 Masters Students of Arabic language and literature at Shiraz University who were selected 42 of them with census sampling. The Emotional intelligence questionnaire was ‘ Bar-On’ . Graduate students' scores were used as a tool for the achievement to Arabic conversation. The content and structure carried out to address the questionnaire's validity and its reliability was determined by Cronbach`s alpha coefficients. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS in two descriptive and inferential levels (Pearson correlation and multiple regression). The results showed a significant relationship between Emotional intelligence and achievement in Arabic conversation. Among the components of Emotional intelligence: The extent of the decrease in the progress on the Arabic conversation was In-person skills with correlation coefficient (R=0/409) > General Ethics (R=0/372) > Interpersonal skills (R=0/352) > stress management (R=0/256).
