Abstract

Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is one of the most important surgical procedures that performing around the world. And CXR can play an important role in diagnosis and assessment of surgical complication in undergoing CABG patients. The goal of this study is to evaluate the transient and persistent non pathological changes on tie post operative CXR indices in these patients for avoiding to the erroneously over diagnosis and over treatment in clinical situations. Materials and Methods: Form March to September 2001, 101 underwent CABG patients at department of cardiovascular surgery of afshar hospital in yazd, selected by census and examined by an observational descriptive-analytical and cross sectional study. We reported the following indices in the pre and post operation: cardiac diameter, thoracic diameter, cardio-thoracic ratio, and superior and hilar mediastinum diameter and costophrenic angles. In all patients surgical incision was median sternotomy. Data entered to a questionnaire and analyzed with spss 11.5 and paired t test, chi-square and fisher-exact test. Results: The total mean age of 101 patients (69 male and 32 females) was 58.57±8.81 year. No differences observed among males and females due to age. The widening of hilar mediastinum was 1.H1.26 cm and c-t ratio increase was 4.9±4.6%. In 85.28% of patients costophrenice angles have been blunted after CABG. No medical or surgical intervention conducted for asymptomatic cases. These changes were not related to the age or sex. Conclusion: While we observed increasing of heart and medistinal diameters but no medical or surgical intervention conducted for asymptomatic cases. This shows that changes of indices of CXR after CABG can be normal and if patients is asymptomatic he needs no intervention.
