Abstract

Background: Pap smear is known as the best screening test for CERVICAL CANCER. It is necessary to perform it correctly and control the factors, which lead to inadequate smear. Materials and Methods: To determine the frequency of inadequate cervical cytology and its relation, a cross-sectional study were conducted in gynecologic clinic of Mirza Koochak-Khan Hospital through the year of 1379. Results: The range of age of patients was 17-80 with mean of 40.7 and SD: 11.9. The frequency rate of INADEQUATE PAP SMEAR was 6.1%, 72.3% were adequate and 21.6% adequate but limited. In patients without infection the rate of adequate but limited and inadequate smears were 74.7%, 18.7% and 6.6% receptivity. When infection was observed, the rate of adequate smears decreased (68.4%) and adequate but limited increased (26.4%) the rate of inadequate smear had minimal change (5.2%). In smears with inflammatory changes, the rates of adequate and inadequate smears were 75.8% and 2.4%. These rates were 66.3% and 12.3% respectively for smears without inflammatory changes. Conclusion: The GENITAL INFECTION are not associated with increasing inadequate smears, although the adequate but limited report tends to increase, this report dose not indicate to repeat pap smear in all cases. Thus taking pap smear is advisable even when the GENITAL INFECTION exists.
