Title

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND RISK OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

Pages

  725-728

Abstract

Background: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY has long been related to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (COO), including ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (AMI).The problem of inactivity is compounded by the fact that physicians do not routinely screen patients for PHYSICAL ACTIVITY or provide counseling. Materials and Methods: We conducted a hospital-based case-control study and collected data from 250 cases of ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION and 250 controls matched on age and gender. Cases were all patients admitted to the coronary care unit of Imam Khomeini Hospital and were screened to identify incident cases of AMI. Controls had no previous diagnosis of heart disease or history of exertional chest pain. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY was assessed using a questionnaire which was filled during an interview. Mean age of the study group was 54.8±11.9. According to PHYSICAL ACTIVITY most of the cases were inactive compare to controls that most of them had a simple walking p<0.001. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY during LEISURE TIME in cases were 15.6% lower than controls which were 29.2% (p<001). Mean PHYSICAL ACTIVITY time in case group was 3.6 hours and in control group was 4.7 hour (p=0.044) We may therefore conclude that decrease in PHYSICAL ACTIVITY could increase the risk of AMI .Screening for PHYSICAL ACTIVITY among patients who are at risk of CHD and appropriate counseling could be integrated in the primary and secondary preventive measures.
