Abstract

Background: The most common cause of abdominal surgery is APPENDECTOMY. This disease has different signs and symptoms and differential diagnosis. APPENDECTOMY is the treatment of choice of acute APPENDICITIS. The shorter time between beginning of symptoms and APPENDECTOMY, the fewer complications will occur. In this study we evaluated the patients who were undergone APPENDECTOMY due to acute APPENDICITIS.Materials and Methods: This study was designed as a longitudinal analytical one. All patients, who were undergone APPENDECTOMY in pediatric medical center from September 2002 to September 2004, were included in our study. Results: 148 patients were undergone APPENDECTOMY during these 2 years. Among these, 71 cases (47.97%) were female and 77 cases (52.03%) were male. They were from 18months to 14 years old. All patients whom were operated during first 24 hours, had APPENDICITIS without any complication the most common complication in First 3 days was localized infection in the pelvis (43.75%) , generalized peritonitis in 3th - 7th days (64.28%) and APPENDICULAR COLLECTION OR ABSCESS after 7th day (85.71%).Conclusion: We believe that APPENDECTOMY is gold standard treatment for APPENDICITIS; therefore we recommend APPENDECTOMY as a treatment of choice for acute APPENDICITIS.
