Title

COMORBIDITY OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER IN MANIC AND REMISSION PHASES OF BIPOLAR PATIENTS

Abstract

Background: A few cases of remission of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in manic episodes and relapse of these symptoms along with remission of MANIA have been reported, but it hasn't been any comparison between the rate of these symptoms in MANIA and remission phases previously. The aim of this project was this comparison in a cross-sectional study.Materials and Methods: 60 patients (18 females and 42 males) with bipolar-I-disorder (based on DSM-IV criteria) in two equally groups were evaluated. Individuals of the first group were manic and of the second group were in remission. To assess obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms severity, Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) was used and to identify cases of OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD), the cutoff point of that scale was used. The Young MANIA Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) were used to identify manic symptoms severity in the first group and to show normal mood states in the second group. Data were analyzed by statistical methods. Results: In the first and the second groups the mean scores of Y-BOCS were 5.9 (SD 8.92) and 7.9 (SD 8.53), and the rate of OCD morbidity were 13.3% and 16.7%, respectively. The differences of these scores between two groups were not statistically significant; based on t and chi-square tests. The correlation of manic and OC symptoms severity was not statistically significant; based on Pearson correlation test. Conclusion: Therefore, these findings don't confirm the previous reports of decreasing of OC symptoms in manic episodes, and it is suggested longitudinal and controlled studies.
