Abstract

Background: CONTACT LENSES have become an increasingly popular mode of correction of refractive errors. Microbial contamination of contact lens (CL) systems may play an important role in contact lens-associated ocular infections. CL cases are a potential source of pathogens associated with corneal ulcers. Materials and Methods: This survey established the incidence of BACTERIAl CL case contamination in 210 asymptomatic wearers in Tehran. In order to identify possible risk factors for BACTERIAl contamination, the storage cases, hydrophilic CL solutions have been analyzed.Results: The results were categorized according to the age, sex, type of CL worn, lens disinfection method and CL solutions. Entrobacteriacae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most frequently isolated microorganisms. Conclusion: The high rates of contamination (63%) suggests that ophthalmologists should promote patient education in order to decrease the level of CL microbial contamination.
