Abstract

Background: The purpose of this scientometric study was a quantitative analysis of RESEARCH on MENTAL HEALTH in MEDICAL CONDITIONS in IRAN. Methods: All scientific papers published in a 30-year period (1973-2002) in both national as well as international scientific journals that were related to MENTAL HEALTH in MEDICAL CONDITIONS considered for this study. Articles are indexed in the "Databank for IRANian MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCHes (IranPsych). The following data have been collected from the articles: year of PUBLICATION and language, specific fields and subject topics, RESEARCH design, location of data collection, financial supports, and the status of collaboration among authors.Results: Of 3031 articles, 611 (20.21%) were related to MENTAL HEALTH and MEDICAL CONDITIONS. Most have been published in general medical journals and the overall trend of PUBLICATIONs shows an arise. The most common areas of RESEARCH were psychology and clinical sciences. The most common RESEARCH topic was psychological factors affecting medical condition, especially gynecological and obstetric problems. The most studied general category of mental disorders were mood, substance-related and anxiety disorders. The most frequent design was cross-sectional. There was no any collaboration among MENTAL HEALTH RESEARCHes and other clinicians in about half of the RESEARCHes.Conclutions: The growing trend of these PUBLICATIONs show the significant contribution of RESEARCHers of medical sciences and MENTAL HEALTH. It is suggested that the department of C-L psychiatry is needed in all general hospitals.
