Abstract

Introduction: One of the most important issues that citizens would confront in city areas and especially in suburbs is having a safe or secure life. Social capital is considered as the most important factor in providing social safety and the absence of it, can diminish all other kinds of capitals in a society. The present research has been carried with the aim of considering the relationship between social capital and social safety among the citizens and suburban of Sari. Method: The research has scrolling method by correlation type and has a functional objective. The statistical population is about 133, 046 citizens of Sari, over 15 years old. Based on the standard sampling table of krejcie and Morgan (1970), 384 people have been chosen. Also, to access the sample, the method of cluster regional sampling has been used in this research. The instruments of data collection were two kinds of social capital and social security questionnaires. The validity of questionnaires has been obtained by the experts’ comments and their reliability by Cronbach’ s Alpha. The results were 0/83 and 0/80 for the social capital and for the social security questionnaires relatively. In order to examine the research hypothesis by the normality of data, we have used both parametric tests of Pearson correlation coefficient as well as regression tests. Findings: Research findings have been shown a significant relationship between social capital and all of its fields (such as: social participation, social trust, social cohesion, and social relationships) with social security of citizens of marginal neighboring Sari. Also, the findings of multivariate regression have been shown that social participation variables and social relationships have the most impact and the variables of social trust and social cohesion have the least effect. Conclusion: The results of this research indicate that there is a meaningful relationship between social capital and social security among the citizens. By the means, social capital increasing among them would improve the sense of being secured and vice versa. In fact, this hypothesis is an affirmation of Putnam’ s theory of social capital and its role in social security. Coordination of the research findings with the Giddens, Johnson, Putnam, Parsons and Bourdieus’ theories in the explanation of the role of strengthening social capital on the extent of increasing the sense of social security would reveal the necessity of providing and strengthening social capital of the society. Therefore, low enforcement officials, administrators and politicians in civil affairs can use social capital and it’ s components to develop the city of Sari and could reduce its social problems, including social security and, consequently, increase the feeling security by taking basic actions.
