Abstract

Introduction: Hair removal as a way for preparation the surgical site has been , always argued. This study compares the SURGICAL SITE INFECTION rate in two methods: CLIPPING in the morning of the surgery and SHAVING the night before the surgery. Methods: In this clinical trial 200 male patients who has come to Sina Hospital from July 2000to April 2001 for elective surgery, have been concluded. They were divided in two groups. In first group SHAVING in the night before surgery and in the second group CLIPPING in the morning of the surgery was used. The SURGICAL SITE INFECTION in these two groups after 15 days was studied. Results: The incidence of SURGICAL SITE INFECTION was 5.5 %. (3 in CLIPPING and 8 in SHAVING). The incidence of infection in first group was 2.7 times more than second group.(1.04-6.82). Conclusion: The incidence of SURGICAL SITE INFECTION in the CLIPPING group, the morning of the surgery was lower in comparison with the SHAVING group in the night before surgery. Using CLIPPING in the morning of surgery instead of SHAVING seems logical.
