A SURVEY OF SIGNS, SYMPTOMS AND COMPLICATIONS OF INTALUTERINE GROWTH RETARDATION PATIENTS IN VALI-E- ASR HOSPITAL

Abstract

 Background: INTRAUTERINE GROWTH RETARDATION (IUGR) appears an different conditions and causes, manifests by multiple signs, symptoms and complications and accompanies high rate of mortality and morbidity. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study, we have surveyed 1649 neonates in Vali-e-Asr Hospital, Tehran, Iran from March 1999 to Feb 2000, and we have found 92 cases of IUGR. In whole, we have analyzed our data to find any relations between mothers chronic diseases, ECLAMPSIA/fa?page=1&sort=1&ftyp=all&fgrp=all&fyrs=all" target="_blank"> PRE-ECLAMPSIA, ECLAMPSIA, birth traumas, clinical and para-clinical manifestation of neonates and IUGR. Results: In a year, from 334 low birth weight (LBW) neonates, 92 (27.5%) were categorized as IUGR, and we have found significant relations between mothers chronic diseases, ECLAMPSIA/fa?page=1&sort=1&ftyp=all&fgrp=all&fyrs=all" target="_blank"> PRE-ECLAMPSIA and ECLAMPSIA with IUGR (p<0.05). Signs, symptoms and complications which we found in IUGR group were: apgar score less than 6 in 20% of neonates, thick mecunium 20%, septicemia 16.3%, respiratory distress syndrome 10.9%, mecunium aspiration syndrome 8.7%, congenital malformations 8.7% and mortality 15.2% (14). Laboratory (para clinical) signs were hypoglycemia 51.1%, thrombocytopea 18.4%, polycythemia 16.3% hypocalcemia 12%,neutropenia 8.7% and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy 4.6%.Conclusions: IUGR neonates were about one third of LBW neonates. Whom in eat danger of mortality and morbidity and in need of more specific care and attention.
