Title

Efficacy and Safety of Bupropion in Quality of Life of Cancer Patients: A Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial

Pages

  20-33

Abstract

Background and purpose: Poor quality of life in cancer patients is an essential factor that influences their lives. Many studies have been done to evaluate the efficacy of medical compositions on quality of life. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of bupropion, as an antidepressant, in quality of life of cancer patients. Materials and methods: In a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial, a total of 30 eligible cancer patients were randomly divided into two groups to receive either bupropion (n=15) or placebo (n=15). bupropion was administered at 75 mg/day for the first three days and 150 mg/day until the end of the study. quality of life was measured by EORCT-QLQ-C3 scale. Adverse effects were assessed on the basis of NCI Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. The study was conducted within six weeks and assessments were done at baseline and the end of weeks two and six. Results: There were no significant differences in the scores between the placebo and bupropion groups at baseline and second week. While, significant differences were seen at the end of week six in function (P=0. 005), symptoms (P=0. 036), and health (P<0. 000). Overall, the mean scores for quality of life showed that bupropion was more effective than placebo. In current study, adverse effects were observed only in two cases. Conclusion: bupropion can be effective in improving the quality of life in cancer patients.
