EFFECT OF LYOPHILIZATION ON KINETIC COEFFICIENTS OF ACTIVATED SLUDGE

Abstract

 Recent progresses in biotechnology have made possible the application of this science in many fieds. One of these fields is wastewater treatment, especially the biological systems of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. In these systems, the microorganisms in the ACTIVATED SLUDGE play a fundamental role in the system"s performance. Therefore, each technology which can facilitate the preparation of a sludge with suitable properties for treatment systems can be effective in the biological treatment performance, and it can also be effective in eliminating the probable defects resulting from occasional hydraulic, and toxic shocks. This research has been performed with the aim of determining the effect of LYOPHILIZATION on microbial quality of ACTIVATED SLUDGE. In this respect, the values of KINETIC COEFFICIENTS consisting of k,Ks,Kd,Y,µmax have been determined before and after LYOPHILIZATION in a bench scale and then the results obtained have been evaluated by use of the statistical methods. The results show that LYOPHILIZATION does not have any effect on microorganism"s performance in ACTIVATED SLUDGE and also no significant difference has been caused in the KINETIC COEFFICIENTS before and after LYOPHILIZATION. It could be concluded that the microorganisms in ACTIVATED SLUDGE have preserved their viability after LYOPHILIZATION.
