Abstract

Background and aim: Patients with acute MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (MI) suffer from abnormal blood gases levels specially hypoxemia, which result from heart-lung dysfunction. In this study we showed the difference of oxygen levels between smokers and non-smokers in MI patients, then the cause was investigated in rabbits. Methods: First, we measured the Hb, HCT, RBC and O2 levels in 46 smoker and non-smoker patients. Then in animal experiments, 35 rabbits were divided into three groups consisting of the smoker, the nicotine receivers and the control. The smoker group was exposed to smoke of cigarettes for 16 days and the nicotine group received nicotine by injection for the same period. In all 3 groups Hb, HCT, RBC and O2 levels were measured before experiments, 16 days later and in smokers, one week and 20 days after the withdrawal. T-test was used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results: The Hb, HCT, RBC and O2 level of smoker were higher than those of non-smoker patients. In animals, Hb, HCT and RBC were increased in smokers. After the withdrawal, all the parameters started to return towards the normal levels and oxygen level was higher than normal during the first week of the withdrawal. Conclusion: O2 level was higher in the smoker patients and its cause was higher free hemoglobin after the MI as a result of SMOKING withdrawal.
