Abstract

Illiteracy as an acute social problem has slowed the process of DEVELOPMENT in society. Since there is a higher rate of illiteracy in developing countries and most illiterate people are women, the eradication of illiteracy among Iranian women is critical. Within the framework of discussions on human DEVELOPMENT, the objective of this article is to study the causes and motivations of women and in particular the RURAL WOMEN in welcoming education and LITERACY campaign and also to study its potential impact on DEVELOPMENT changes in Iran. This research has been conducted by interviews with 39 women in four villages in Tehran, Zanjan, Mazandaran and Khorasan provinces. This research deals with the basic causes and motivations of women to participate in LITERACY classes, also study of those who encourage them as well as restrictions and difficulties of education and so on. The findings indicate the change in attitudes of RURAL WOMEN on education , its impact on their lives ,their children and family size. Furthermore, they present the achievment of economic independence, understanding of the surrounding world and consequently moving away from playing their traditional role.
