Title

PERITONITIS IN CONTINUOUS AMBULATORY PERITONEAL DIALYSIS IN CHILDREN IN ALI ASGHAR HOSPITAL

Pages

  5-9

Abstract

To determine the PERITONITIS rate and RISK FACTORS in children on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. the clinical data of patients were reviewed respectively between November 1993 and August 2001. The life table and univariate-multivariate were used for statistical annalysis. 16 Thenckoff catheters were inserted surgically in 9 children (average age of 20 months). The incidence of PERITONITIS was 1: 3.44 treatment month. The mean time from starting dialysis to the first episode of PERITONITIS was 2.7 month. There were statistically significant relations between the 1st time of PERITONITIS and carrier state, year of insertion of catheter, adaptor separation , break in catheter by multivariate analysis (p =0.017). The median survival of catheter was better between 1998-2001 period (12 month) (p=0.015).In spite of high PERITONITIS rate, the survival of catheter has improved between 1998-2001. We recommend to reduce the PERITONITIS rate in children by using prophylaxy before and after inserting catheter, improve the knowledge of parents/patients and staff by continuous teaching, conduct close follow up and improve the quality of equipment of dialysis.
