Abstract

SEPTIC ABORTION is one of the most important complications in pregnancy that can occur either spontaneously or else induced. SEPTIC ABORTION can lead to acute or chronic complications, and an evaluation of its causes and the factors can be an effective step forward in the promotion of health in women in their fertility age. This study with the aim to determine the incidence, epidemiologic factors and complications of SEPTIC ABORTION has been designed at Alavi-Hospital of Ardebil during the years 1999-2001.This descriptive-retrospective study was conducted on 82 patients out of 1249 abortion cases hospitalized with the diagnosis of SEPTIC ABORTION in Alavi hospital of Ardabil city. The information’s were obtained from hospital records by completion of the questionare. Incidence of SEPTIC ABORTION was 6.56%, 59 cases (72%) were urban and 47 cases (57%) had gestational age between 8-12 weeks. Mean age was 33.06 years (range: 16-46 years), 42 cases (51%) had positive history of INDUCED ABORTION and 28 cases (34%) had pervious abortion.Most of the patients (47.5%) were multiparous (2-5 gravidity). The mean hospital stay was 3.4 days. 33 cases (40%) had anemia and 7 cases (8.5%) had complications such as: SEPTIC SHOCK, endocarditis, septic emboli to eye and PID. No mortality was observed.Although the incidence of SEPTIC ABORTION in this study is lower than world reports, and had also a progressive decline in the past 3 years, but because of the significant complications and mortality accompanied with SEPTIC ABORTION, more studies are needed to understand the predisposing factors especially in illegally INDUCED ABORTION, to promote the health status of women in the society.
