Abstract

Early detection of pregnancy- induced hypertension (PIH) has an important role in prevention of the complications. Several biochemical tests suggested to be of value in prediction and detection of PIH.In this study a correlation between SERUM CALCIUM and uric acid with pregnancy induced hypertension was assessed. This study was conducted on 45 pregnant women with normal blood pressure, and a similar number with pregnancy induced hypertension. In this cross sectional study, the association of these two chemical agents to PIH and feto-maternal complications are evaluated. The results have shown that the mean calcium level in hypertensive pregnant women (8.31±0.18 (mg/dl)) was significantly lower than the normotensives (9.13±0.19, (p<0.01)). Also, SERUM URIC ACID in hypertensive patients was 5.36 ±0.24mg/dl and in normotensives was 3.99±0.28 mg/dl which were significantly different (p<0.01).A maternal SERUM CALCIUM level of 8.4 mg/dl appeared to be the optimal cut-off point for identifying Pili, with a sensitivity of 73.5% and specificity of 80.4%. The sensitivity and specificity of having Pili with a SERUM URIC ACID level 4.95 mg/dl were 79.4% and 75%, respectively. The result supports the association between maternal complications, higher uric acid and lower calcium levels. There is no evidence from this study to support the association between perinatal morbidity and higher uric acid and lower calcium levels in patients with Pili. The data in accordance with international literature, confirm the utility of SERUM CALCIUM and uric acid levels for detection of Pili.
