Abstract

Background: Recent studies have shown that DEPRESSION during PREGNANCY is even more common than post-partum DEPRESSION. Given the serious effects of DEPRESSION during PREGNANCY, the aim of our study was to determine the frequency of DEPRESSION and its related factors in pregnant women admitted to two teaching hospitals.Methods: In a cross-sectional study, we studied 400 pregnant women who were referred to Prenatal Clinics of Baqiyatallah and Najmieh Hospitals over a 2.5 month period. The instrument for the evaluation of DEPRESSION was Beck DEPRESSION Inventory.Findings: The frequency of DEPRESSION was 21.3 % (85 cases). DEPRESSION was associated with low maternal age (p=0.008), number of gestations (p=0.001), gestational age (p=0.018), number of other children (p=0.001), history of DEPRESSION (p=0.001) and history of abortion (p=0.004). Logistic regression analysis showed that only low maternal age (under 25 years), history of DEPRESSION and history of abortion were risk factors of DEPRESSION.Conclusion: Due to the high frequency of DEPRESSION in pregnant women, screening of DEPRESSION is necessary during this period.
