Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) still remains a prevalent hygiene and health problem in developing countries. Our patient was an 87 year old woman who was hospitalized because of RUQ abdominal pain and tenderness, nausea and vomiting since 20 days before admission. According to the CT scan and ultrasound imaging, cancer of the head of the pancreas was suspected initially. Diagnostic and curative surgery was performed for patient due to persistent nausea and vomiting and the probability of an upper GI obstruction owing to that lesion. Although there was evidence of caseousis secretion from the abdominal mass during operation, the abscess was manipulated by surgeons. Pathological study of biopsy specimens confirmed the diagnosis of TB. After surgery, patient left the hospital voluntarily but she was admitted again with symptoms of acute renal failure (loss of consciousness and elevated creatinine) and passed away for this reason unfortunately. In conclusion, abdominal TB abscesses can mimic malignant abdominal masses and, thus, any manipulation of such abscesses can have several complications for the patient.
