Abstract

Background: CESAREAN SECTION is the most common surgery among women. Nowadays, cesarean delivery has relatively low risk, however, higher morbidity has been reported when compared to vaginal delivery. The aim of our study was to determine the TREND of CESAREAN SECTION in public and private centers of Babol, in 1994-99.Materials and methods: This study was conducted based on the existing data of deliveries in public and private centers of Babol. We determine the TREND of CESAREAN SECTION and compared it between, the public and private centers, using chi square and Z test.Results: In the public center the rate of CESAREAN SECTION was increased significantly from 20.4% in 1994 to 48.4% in 1999 (P<0.001), however. in private center this rate was 41.9% in 1994, 74.3% in 1987 and 65.4% in 1999. There was a statistically difference between private and public centers and also between male and female gestation (P<0.0001).Conclusion: The results have revealed the high prevalence of CESAREAN SECTION and increasing TREND in Babol when comparing to universal statistics. Thus, the Ministry of Health should manage a monitoring system within the family health-planning program to promote the vaginal deliveries and to change the attitude of women with respect to CESAREAN SECTION.
