Abstract

Purpose: To report a case of CORNEAL RING INFILTRATION following topical TETRACAINE ABUSE, which is the most severe from of toxic ulcerative keratitis.Patient and findings: A 19-year-old man complaining of severe pain in his left eye, was referred to Farabi Eye Hospital. There was a history of TETRACAINE ABUSE for a week. Clinically, the patient had conjunctival injection and a CORNEAL RING INFILTRATION which subsided after cessation of tetracaine.Conclusion: The clinical presentation of CORNEAL RING INFILTRATION following TETRACAINE ABUSE can mimic acanthamoeba, herpetic, and bacterial keratitis. Appropriate management depends on high level of suspicion and obtaining a precise history of anesthetic drug abuse.
