Abstract

Macrolides are a group of antibiotics which are effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, as well as some sensitive species of Mycobacteria (such as Kansasii and Scrofulaceum), Legionella pneumophila, mycoplasma, Rickettsia, chlamydia and Campylobacter. AZITHROMYCIN is a relatively new drug from macrolides family that has extended half-life, broad spectrum, easy application and few SIDE EFFECTS. Because of these advantages, this drug is now more frequently used by ophthalmologist. This review article deals with applications, PHARMACOKINETICS and SIDE EFFECTS of AZITHROMYCIN.
