Abstract

Objective: Difficulty in achieving information usually is the first silent sign in progressive neurologic diseases as Alzheimer. Other cognitive processes such as SENTENCE COMPREHENSION and understanding are impaired in Alzheimer. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between WORKING MEMORY and SENTENCE COMPREHENSION in patients with Alzheimer and Compare them with healthy elderly persons.Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional, analytical and comparative study, ten Alzheimer's patients aged sixty or older were simple randomly selected among Iran Alzheimer association patients and ten healthy elderly persons were matched with patients and selected. Gathering information was applied through interview with patients and their family members and answering the epidemiological questionnaire. Then Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), WORKING MEMORY and SENTENCE COMPREHENSION tests were used for data collection and Pearson's correlation coefficient and Independent T test were used to analyze them. Results: There were no significant differences between two groups in phonological and articulatory tests on span in WORKING MEMORY (P=0.480), but their differences in central executive processes in WORKING MEMORY (P=0.006), simple sentences comprehension task (P<0.001) and complicated sentences comprehension task (P=0.004) were significant. There were direct and incomplete correlations between phonological span variable with simple (P=0.120, r=0.524) and complicated (P=0.007, r=0.790) sentences comprehension, and also between central executive processes with simple (P<0.001, r=0.874) and complicated (P=0.035, r=0.667) sentences comprehension in patients groupConclusion: The findings suggest that WORKING MEMORY capacity in patients with ALZHEIMER DISEASE compared with healthy elders is some what reduced. Also, SENTENCE COMPREHENSION impairment in these patients may be due to reduced resources of WORKING MEMORY and highly correlated with central executive processes.
